Marine aquaculture for sustainable fishery
The commercial culture of marine organisms is mostly done in coastal regions. Marine aquaculture also known as Mariculture focuses mostly on coastal regions or landbased flow-through or recirculating systems with special emphasis on optimizing the surrounding environmental conditions for recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). Open culture facilities in the sea are restricted to sheltered areas close to the coastline and the complete inshore area, such as fjords and bays. Net cages for fish culture, long lines, rafts and poles are applied for mussel and algae culture in these areas.
Marine Aquaculture for sustainable fisheries is based on our knowledge in the development of modern aquaculture techniques including experience in system design, site selection, and selection of collector materials for spat collection as well as physiology and ecology of cultivated organisms.
Marine aquaculture for sustainable fisheries at imare comprises three core topics:
- Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS)
- Open Ocean technology (including nearshore and offshore)
- Sustainable fisheries
